ATTENTION ALL CUSTOMERS:

DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD - NEVER TOUCH A DOWNED POWER LINE!

It’s extremely important to always assume that any power line is active. This means if you come across a downed power line or other type of electric wire - even telephone cable wires, or lines that could be downed within a tree or across a tree line – STAY AWAY FROM THEM.  Do not touch them. Do not drive over them.

Downed power lines could also make contact with flooded structures and puddles of water. Always stay clear, there is no way of knowing whether or not the power line is still energized. To avoid the serious risk of being electrocuted, stay as far away from power lines as possible.

Then, once you’ve established a safe distance, please report downed or damaged power lines, or other concerns over electric service/equipment, to FPU at 800.427.7712 or FPUC.com/ReportOutage

ATTENTION ALL CUSTOMERS:

We are closely monitoring Hurricane Dorian, and our emergency response plans have been activated.

FPU is committed to keeping you, your loved ones and the communities we serve safe, and we urge you to be prepared for Hurricane Dorian and its potential impact. Remember, this Storm’s track could change direction at any time.

As you prepare for Hurricane Dorian, please carefully review the important safety tips and information below.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS BEFORE THE STORM

  • Customers should move or secure all loose items (grills, patio furniture, plants/portable planters, etc.) that can cause unnecessary damage to your home or gas meter.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and store them in a safe place as they can become a hazard if left in the open during severe weather.
  • Customers should not shut off their gas supply at the meter. Only authorized utility or emergency personnel are permitted to operate meter equipment.
  • If you so choose, you CAN turn off the natural gas to your individual appliances at the valve located behind each piece of equipment.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS DURING A HURRICANE

  • Remain indoors and stay far away from windows, skylights and glass doors.
  • In the unlikely event your gas service is interrupted, please do not attempt to turn your gas back on.

SAFETY TIPS AFTER THE STORM

  • If you smell a distinct rotten egg odor or otherwise sense a gas related emergency, please leave the area and call 800.427.7712 immediately
  • Do not operate any gas appliances that you suspect have been flooded or damaged.
  • Do not remove fallen trees or do any digging without calling 8-1-1 to locate your utility lines.
  • Call FPU to have our trained technicians relight your pilot lights, inspect your appliances to ensure they are in proper working condition and turn your natural gas back on, if needed (All FPU personnel carry ID to be presented upon request)

Leave the area and call FPU at 800.427.7712 immediately if:

  • Your gas service is damaged in any way, which would be an extremely rare event
  • A gas pipeline has been broken or damaged
  • You smell a distinct rotten egg odor

Or, call 9-1-1 once you safely leave the area, if the smell is particularly strong or you sense a more serious emergency. In case of a gas emergency, remember:

UNTIL SECURELY OUTSIDE THE LOCATION, DO NOT:

  • Use a cell phone or telephone
  • Smoke, light a match or do anything else that may cause a spark
  • Turn on or off any electric switches
  • Ring the doorbell or open any garage doors
  • Start or operate a motor vehicle

TO KEEP YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES SAFE, DO NOT USE GENERATORS INDOORS! Only use generators outdoors and away from all doors, windows and vents as generators can rapidly produce high levels of carbon monoxide.

Remember that you can’t smell or see carbon monoxide—and if you start to feel sick, dizzy or weak while using a generator, get fresh air right away.

DOWNED POWER LINE? IMPORTANT FPU SAFETY REMINDERS!

Please stay safe. Always assume a downed power line is energized and stay away.

FPU electric customers can report all downed power lines at 800.427.7712.

ATTENTION ALL CUSTOMERS:

scam1

Before the storm, FPU wants to take a moment to remind you about utility scams. Often scammers will contact you by phone or email acting as a company representative to obtain payment or personal information.

Protect Yourself From Scammers

Protect yourself from scammers. The first step to protecting yourself is to recognize suspicious activity. New and common scams include impersonators who:

  • Pretend to be from your utility. (Your caller ID might even display the name of your utility)
  • Threaten to turn off your utility service unless you act immediately
  • Demand immediate payment – often by prepaid debit card

Ways To Protect Yourself

FPU may contact you regarding a past due bill. To avoid being the victim of a potential scam, we recommend that you ask the caller two or more questions pertaining to your bill that only an FPU Representative would know. For example:

  • What is my account password? (If you have not registered one with us, we recommend you do so for safety reasons)
  • What were my last two bill amounts?
  • What was the amount of my last two “meter reads”?
  • What forms of identification did I use to start my service?

How To Respond To Suspicious Activity

If you believe you’ve encountered scammers posing as FPU employees, or involving the name and likeness of another utility company, please take the following steps:

  • Hang up the phone, or close the door
  • Call your utility company’s direct and verified phone number. You can find this number on your utility bill, as well as the company’s website
  • Do not give the caller or visitor a prepaid card, a wire transfer or any other form of payment that may be difficult for law enforcement to trace
  • Ignore suspicious requests for personal information, such as bank account numbers, user names and passwords, credit card numbers, and Social Security numbers
  • Delete and block any emails from utilities that are not your service provider
  • Delete all suspicious emails that require immediate action to verify or provide personal information

Report Fraud Or Scams

If you have been the victim of a scam, please contact us by calling 1.800.427.7712. You can also contact the authorities listed below:

  • Federal Trade Commission (File A Complaint Online. Or Call 1.877.382.4357)

Customers urged to proactively prepare for the storm

FERNANDINA BEACH, FL – Florida Public Utilities Company (FPU) is monitoring the current projections of Hurricane Dorian and preparing to respond around the clock as safely and quickly as possible in the event the Storm impacts FPU’s service area. Some forecasts indicate the Storm may make landfall in Florida as early as Tuesday, September 3. • Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation

FPU urges customers to consider filling the fuel tanks of their vehicles in the event a power outage affects service to neighborhood gas stations. Customers using a generator should follow manufacturer’s instructions and be sure to locate generators outside, in well-ventilated areas.
Customers with special needs, such as those who may be elderly, disabled or dependent on electricity for medical equipment, should have alternate arrangements in place should they experience an extended power outage.

If you discover a downed electric wire or power line, assume it is energized and stay as far away as possible. Call 1.800.427.7712 immediately to report the location of the power line. Natural gas and propane customers should not turn off their gas supply at the meter. Only authorized utility or emergency personnel should turn your meter valve on or off. If you smell natural gas, get to a safe location and call 1.800.427.7712 or 911 immediately.

After the Storm, natural gas and propane customers should not operate any appliances believed to be damaged or flooded. Call FPU to have a trained technician re-light your pilot lights and inspect your appliances to ensure they are in safe condition.

Customers are urged to consider the following safety tips in the event of flooding:
  • Proceed with care if you have experienced flooding in your home
  • Do not enter a room with standing water, particularly if the water covers electrical outlets or electrical cords that are plugged into outlets
  • Confirm the electrical system is turned off before entering a flooded room or basement
  • Do not attempt to shut off your electrical system if you have to stand in water or on a wet floor to do so
  • If you experienced flooding, do not turn on any lights or appliances without having a comprehensive inspection performed by a licensed electrician and also by a registered plumber with a gasfitter's license for gas appliances.

Governor Ron DeSantis Declares State of Emergency, Urges Floridians to Prepare for Hurricane Dorian

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-189, declaring a state of emergency for counties in the path of Hurricane Dorian. The Governor is urging all Floridians on the East Coast to prepare for impacts, as the latest forecasts from the National Hurricane Center project Hurricane Dorian will make landfall on Florida’s East Coast as a major hurricane.

By declaring a state of emergency, Governor DeSantis is ensuring that state and local governments have ample time, resources and flexibility to prepare. The State Emergency Operations Center will activate to a Level 2 on Thursday morning, enhancing the coordination between federal, state and local emergency management agencies.

“Today, I am declaring a state of emergency to ensure Florida is fully prepared for Hurricane Dorian,” said Governor DeSantis. “It’s important for Floridians on the East Coast to monitor this storm closely. Every Florida resident should have seven days of supplies, including food, water and medicine, and should have a plan in case of disaster. I will continue to monitor Hurricane Dorian closely with emergency management officials. The state stands ready to support all counties along the coast as they prepare.”

“Because of the uncertainty in the track of this storm, every resident along the East Coast needs to be ready,” said Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz. “As updates come out, it’s important that Floridians continue to pay attention to media and local officials as the track of this storm has been changing and can continue to change rapidly. By having an Executive Order in place and by activating the State Emergency Operations Center to a Level 2, we are fully prepared to support any community that might be impacted.”
