IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR AFFECTED NORTHWEST CUSTOMERS:

We anticipate power to be restored by October 31st to all customers who are able to receive service.

Many homes and businesses sustained major structural damage. Depending on the severity of damage to your property, you may require repairs by licensed electricians and other tradesmen before you can receive electric service.

On our behalf, Florida Power and Light has enlisted 200 linemen, bringing our total to just under 500, to assist us around-the-clock in rebuilding service to Blountstown, Bristol and Altha. This will ensure that when the substation is energized, we can begin to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible to those hard-hit communities. Malone, Greenwood and Alford sustained significant damage and some properties may be unable to accept power even after it’s been restored to the area.

[October 15, 2018- 1:15 pm]

HURRICANE MICHAEL UPDATE:

FPU now has more people deployed on Hurricane Michael restoration efforts than it has total employees in the state of Florida.  Power has been restored to 100 commercial and residential customers, including the Dialysis Center and Marianna High School, where currently 170 general public residents and 27 special needs residents people are sheltered.   Today,  we expect to restore power to Jackson Hospital, the Family Dollar Distribution Center and other commercial customers who can accept power where electrical equipment or wiring is still intact.  FPU is coordinating our tree clearing efforts with the City and Police Department to ensure we restore power to as many customers as possible as soon and as safely as possible.

In Altha, Gulf Power expects to have the substation online by midnight on October 17th. In Blountstown, it is anticipated the substation will be energized by midnight on the 18th. Once the substations are energized, FPU will be ready to restore power to properties where electrical equipment is still intact and able to accept power from the grid.

Several large projects are currently underway, including rebuilding miles of power lines that feed Cottondale and Altha, completing Chipola River crossing in Marianna, and replacing the line from the Blountstown substation to the Apalachicola River Crossing to Bristol.  These areas have sustained severe damage and should expect prolonged outages.  If you or a loved-one require assistance for medical equipment, we strongly suggest you safely relocate until power has been restored.

As always we will keep you posted on our progress.

Safety Tip: ALWAYS assume downed wires are energized and dangerous & stay away. Be vigilant!

-Avoid walking near fallen trees and through debris, electrified downed wires may be out of sight.

-Avoid walking into or driving through standing water, as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

-Avoid chain link fences—they may be electrified by a downed line.

[October 14, 2018- 9:33 pm]

RESTORATION UPDATES:

We continue to work closely with Gulf Power to restore the transmission service which supplies power to FPU’s power distribution system.  Once the transmission line, substations and primary circuits have been repaired, the more labor-intensive work of repairing the distribution lines that serve our neighborhoods and individual homes will begin. After power has been fully restored to the system, structural damage to your property may require additional electrical work.

The outstanding work of our linemen and tree crews in rebuilding FPU’s system has resulted in marked progress.  In the next few days, we look forward to providing additional restoration details to our customers.  Please continue to check back for the latest updates and thank you for your continued patience.

[October 14, 2018- 2:16 pm]

AREA IMPACTS:

Certain areas were more significantly impacted than others and those customers will experience an extended outage. Together with a vast network of skilled personnel we are strongly positioned to repair damage and have begun replacing damaged power lines and will continue to advance. Dozens of state and federal emergency agencies are now in the area.

In Jackson County, the intensity of the storm combined with the forward motion of 10 – 20 mph winds brought the eye wall directly over Jackson County.  Marianna was more significantly impacted than any other area of the county.  The eye moved over Marianna and caused severe structural damage by sustained winds reported to exceed 120 mph. Residents of Calhoun County, specifically Blountstown, Bristol, and Altha took a direct hit from the eye wall and sustained severe damage.  Crews are diligently clearing paths so residents can gain access to main roadways.

We continue to work closely with Gulf Power to repair damage to the transmission system.  In an effort to allow our customers and co-workers an opportunity to rebuild, the Marianna office, serving Jackson, Calhoun and Liberty Counties, will remain closed until further notice and billing for customers in those counties has been temporarily postponed.

FPU is committed to restoring your service as quickly and safely as possible despite the severity of the damage inflicted on our community.  Please depend on us to honor our dedication to you.  FPU will keep you regularly informed as updates become available. We urge residents to stay away from downed power lines and out of standing water where power lines may be submerged.

We are standing beside you and remain grateful for your trust and appreciate your patience as, together, we rebuild what Michael wrought.

[October 14, 2018- 7:24 am]

AREA IMPACTS:

Certain areas were more significantly impacted than others and those customers will experience an extended outage.  It may not be evident but widespread work has begun.  Dozens of state and federal emergency agencies are now in the area.  Together with a vast network of skilled personnel we are strongly positioned to repair damage and have already begun replacing damaged power lines and will continue to advance.

When hurricanes such as Michael intensify all the way to landfall, they can carry dangerous winds much further inland than storms that weaken at land.  Michael was a very rare event, with few precedents in Atlantic hurricane history.   The forward motion of 10-20 miles per hour, as it made landfall allowed the core to stay intact for five hours before it began to degrade.

Most roads are affected by downed trees and crews are slowly clearing paths so residents can get to main roadways and seek help.

We at FPU are committed to restoring your service as quickly and safely as possible despite the severity of the damage inflicted on our community.  Please depend on us to honor our dedication to you.  FPU will keep you regularly informed as updates become available.  Please check back for more updates and stay safe. We are standing beside you and remain grateful for your trust and appreciate your patience as, together, we rebuild what Michael wrought.

Our Company is working closely with our friends at Gulf Power to assess the extensive damage to their transmission system, which supplies power to FPU’s power distribution system.  We expect to restore power to the Hospital and some local businesses in downtown Marianna once the main transmission system is restored.

Approximately 75% of our system has been compromised; 4000 power poles will require replacement.  There are 115 linemen and more than 20 tree crews hard at work clearing debris to enable restoration efforts. Once the transmission line, substations and primary circuits have been repaired, the more labor-intensive work of repairing the distribution lines that serve our neighborhoods and individual homes will begin. Full power restoration efforts may take multiple weeks to complete.  Please be advised, after power has been fully restored to the system, structural damage to your property may require additional electrical work.

We anticipate potential prolonged outages and strongly suggest you safely relocate if you or a loved-one require power-operated medical equipment.  In any medical emergency, please contact 911.   To report a power emergency, such as a downed powerline, please call:

800-427-7712.

FPU stands beside our neighbors, colleagues and friends as we undertake the enormity of repairing the damage sustained.  We thank you for your patience during this difficult time.

24-Hour Pre-Storm Press Release:

FPU prepares for Hurricane Michael

Fernandina Beach, FL. October 9, 2018 – As Hurricane Michael is expected to impact Northwest Florida. Florida Public Utilities Company continues to make final preparations to implement its proven action plan.  FPU urges its customers, who may be in the path of the storm, to be safe and prepare and review their personal and business plans.  Though its ultimate strength and precise path are both uncertain at this time, FPU’s plan is flexible and the Company is prepared to adapt to any changes in circumstance.

Stay safe by taking special precautions
All indications are that Michael will impact some of FPU’s heavily populated areas, affecting a large portion of FPU’s infrastructure.  As with previous hurricanes, FPU is asking its customers to be prepared and keep a close watch on the development of the storm and follow the advice and guidelines of local government. Customers can visit www.FPUC.com  for more information regarding hurricane tips including generator safety, precautions regarding downed power lines, flooding, protecting electric equipment and much more.  Above all, FPU urges its customers to keep their families safe.

Restoration plan
Following the aftermath, FPU’s restoration plan calls for reestablishing service to the greatest number of customers as quickly and safely as possible concurrent with the restoration of a community’s critical infrastructure. The speed of restoration is based on the path of the storm, its intensity and the amount of resources available.  FPU works with emergency management officials to restore power first to public health and safety facilities and organizations, such as hospitals, police and fire departments, communications, water and sanitary services and transportation.

As with every storm, the Company expects bands of wind and rain to impact its service territory in advance of the storm’s arrival.  In these cases, FPU crews will be out in the field restoring service as long as it is safe to do so.  When sustained wind speeds reach 40 mph or greater, however, FPU will take its crews out of harm’s way until it is safe to return.

Now is the time to prepare. For hurricane status updates and additional safety information, please visit and bookmark our website at FPUCHurricaneUpdates.com, follow us on Twitter or visit our Facebook page. New status updates will be posted as information becomes available.
